ARGOS - Roger Lee Alvis, 89, of First Street, Argos, Indiana died June 15, 2013 at 4:11 p.m. at his residence following an unexpected illness.
He was born on March 26, 1924 in Princeton, Indiana to Gilbert & Caryol (Meeker) Alvis and has lived in the Argos community since 1961, coming from Indianapolis, Indiana. On January 5, 1961 he married Marie Louise Bernero in Plymouth, Indiana. Roger was a Co-Owner of White Arts Printing Company were he brokered printing business for his company. He retired in 1994.
He was a 50 year member of the Franklin F & AM Lodge # 107, Franklin, Indiana; & Argos American Legion Post #68, Argos, Indiana. He served his country in the United States Army as a Paratrooper with the 11th Airborne, 394th Infantry during World War II from February 6, 1943 to November 21, 1945, and was captured by the Germans and was a POW during the war. He earned 3 Bronze Stars and was awarded the Purple Heart.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Alvis of Culver, Indiana; daughters, Donna Overmyer and husband Kenneth of Argos, Indiana, Sandra Pfefferle and husband Barry of Bremen, Indiana, and Carolyn Alvis of California; son, Craig Alvis and wife Stacy of Texas; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and sister, Phyllis Lindle and husband Phillip of Indianapolis, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Terry Treber; sisters, Elizabeth Reed and Mary Bleton; and brothers, Gilbert Alvis and James Alvis.
Memorial Services will be at 11:00 am Thursday, June 27, 2013 at the James Lowell Corey American Legion Post #68 in Argos, Indiana. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia with military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Corps.
