On August 18, 1862, he enlisted at Shielsville(currently Atlanta) in Tipton Co., Indiana, as a private and served with Company 'D', 101st Infantry Regiment Indiana in the American Civil War. He mustered out on at the end of the war on June 24, 1865 in Louisville, Ky.
Andrew first married Jane Taylor and two sons were born of this union: Ora Byrum of Louisiana and Frank Byrum of Huntington. Following the death of his fist wife, he married Susan Miller from Madison Co., Ind. There were five children born of this union: Mrs. Stella Rittenpour of Huntington; Mrs. Lillie Ditzenberger of Fort Wayne; Mrs. Grace Bowman of St. Louis, Mrs. Bertha Albright of Hermit, Ca., and Mrs. Ida Golden of Coesse.
Andrew was a shoemaker by trade and a member of the Coesse Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Coesse Lutheran Cemetery.
