INHUMAN TREATMENT OF AN INFANT

TWO YEAR OLD CHILD MURDERED BY TWO DEPRAVED GIRLS LEFT IN CHARGE OF THE LITTLE ORPHAN DURING THE ABSENCE OF ITS FOSTER MOTHER
The Cleveland Plain Dealer April 26, 1887

On April 25, 1887 Robert Brown, two years old, died after being "whipped a little" for "being very naughty" by Hattie Jewell, 14 and Carrie Smith, 13, in the home of Mrs. Jennie Brown, nee Docile, the foster mother of Robbie and the mother of Carrie. Neighbors listened to the harsh treatment the infant had undergone for the two months he lived with the three in the filthy quarters at 75 Decateur Alley. They will kill poor little Robbie… spanked, beaten and cursed at every turn…he was always asking for something to eat.

No eye witnesses to his murder, but neighbors heard his cries for over two hours that day… All three women charged with Robbie's murder The coroner testified that there were many marks of violence to this 33", 18 pound, apparently about two years of age and poorly nourished infant. His body was covered with welts, black and blue stripes, 30 to 50 bruises…he was severely flogged… He presented a pitiful sight.

The two impudent and uncontrollable girls, deemed to have violent tempers, pled not guilty to the charge of murder in the second degree. Both denied ever harming Robbie and accused witnesses of being mad at them. The girls were convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to ten years each in the penitentiary. The girls giggled as though amused at their sentencing by the judge.

The foster mother, Jennie Docile, was set free after testifying that she never used the whip [which she had found on the street] and didn't know how the marks got on his body. Hattie and Carrie were transported to the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio on the 26 of July 1887, to begin serving their 10 year sentences.
