Ruby Lee McCarty Arthur was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Fletcher. She was born the seventh child of Absalom Kyle McCarty and Birtie May Banks McCarty. She grew up helping her mother Birtie, the owner and operator of the Cottage Hotel of Fletcher. Ruby as a child had the opportunity to see several famous guests at the Cottage Hotel, including Governor Alfalfa Bill Murray and the notorious Frank James of the famous Jesse and Frank James Gang. Ruby had many daily chores at her mother's hotel, which included preparation of family-style meals that made her mother well known in Fletcher. On Aug. 3, 1940, Ruby married the true love of her life, Adrian Lee Arthur, in Fletcher. Adrian was the son of Russell Bennett Arthur and Myrtle Shiflett Arthur. Ruby and Adrian were the parents of Larry Douglas Arthur and Jerry Lynn Arthur, both born in Fletcher. In the early years of their marriage, they lived in several places while Adrian followed the construction business. In 1941, when Adrian joined the Navy to fight in World War II, they resided in their home in Fletcher where Ruby continued to live until her death. Together, Ruby and Adrian were the owners of Arthur Lumber & Hardware and Arthur Hardware in Fletcher. After the sale of their hardware store, Adrian and Ruby became full-time farmers raising cattle and wheat. Ruby was the consummate homemaker and was well known in the Fletcher area for her cooking abilities, generosity and thoughtfulness. Ruby's specialty at Christmas was her famous divinity candy. Her fudge chocolate ran a close second. On Halloween there were always popcorn balls and on Valentine's Day heart-shaped sugar cookies. Ruby loved babies and children. Ruby's two sons, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren never missed a holiday greeting card or birthday card. Usually, with a nice little cash surprise enclosed. Until her death, Ruby who for many years had been a faithful Christian, was proud to be a member of First Baptist Church of Fletcher. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary and was an avid player in her card club. She participated in the Breakfast Club and Secret Sis. Her family was number one for her, she never complained and was known as a truly selfless person. On April 17, 1990, her husband Adrian was taken from this world when he lost his battle with cancer.
Ruby is survived by Larry Arthur and wife, Judy, of Norman; and Jerry Arthur, of Chickasha; six grandchildren and their spouses: Kyle and Ami Arthur, Kelly Arthur Huldisch and Pavao, Robert and Stacey Arthur, Shawn and Andrea Arthur, Jerilyn Arthur Raffe and Scott, and Jerrod and Blayne Arthur; nine great-grandchildren: Emelyn and Eric Arthur, Taylor, Mathew, Alex and Ava Huldisch, Madyson and Allyson Arthur, and Kelton Lee Arthur; and many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Ruby.
