Army Sgt. Hartman was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Friedburg, Germany. Hartman was killed when his convoy was ambushed in Dwaniyan, Iraq. As a child, Jonathan loved guns and tanks but always wanted to learn to fly and be a pilot. In 1996, he moved to Florida with his mother where he enlisted in the Army in October 1999 and was a crewman on an M-1 tank. His family remembers him as a youthful redhead who played the guitar, loved to sing and was an avid reader. He was a dedicated patriot who loved serving in the Army, loved his flag, loved God and country, and was proud of his assigned mission. Fellow soldiers say he was a positive happy person who never complained and was always courteous and caring with others. The day before Jonathan was killed, he called his mother to tell her he had just been extended for 90 days. He was preparing to go into the field living off his tank and would not be in touch with her for quite some time. He assured her that there was no reason to worry because he would be safe inside his tank with God as his rear guard. Jonathan was buried next to his uncle.
