Lum Royce Cumbest Sr., 86, died Friday, March 18, 2011, in Mobile, Alabama. He was born on April 29, 1924, and was a lifelong resident of Cumbest Bluff, Mississippi. He was the son of the late Roy O. Cumbest and the late Mattie Cauley Cumbest. Lum Cumbest graduated from Wade High School in 1942, and he served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946. From 1940 to 1998, he served as president and co-owner of Cumbest Manufacturing Company, Inc., a logging and sawmill operation in Jackson County. He worked as District 1 Supervisor for Jackson County from 1957 to 1982. He served as President of the Mississippi Association of Supervisors in 1980, a founding board member of the Agriculture and Forestry Museum Board in Jackson, and a member of the Board of Directors of Merchants and Marine Bank from 1957 to 1982. He was an active member of Caswell Springs United Methodist Church, where he served as the chairperson of the C.S.U.M.C. Administrative Board from 1949 to 2007. In 2009 Governor Haley Barbour awarded Lum Cumbest the Mississippi Medal of Service for his lifelong commitment to improving the lives of his fellow Mississippians. His favorite vocation, however, was his time spent as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae Holder Cumbest and his brother Hillard Cumbest.
He is survived by his son, Royce (Janey) Cumbest; son, Halsey (Stephanie) Cumbest; son, Barry (Mary) Cumbest; daughter, Dr. Mimi Cumbest; six grandchildren, Jamey (John) Wachsman; Gray (Niece) Cumbest; Adam Cumbest; Emily Cumbest; Ashley Cumbest; and Laura Leigh Cumbest; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Wachsman; Jack Wachsman; Hayden Johnson; and Cambree Cumbest; and one brother, Elvis Cumbest.
Visitation will be held at Caswell Springs United Methodist Church on Sunday, March 20, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
The funeral service will be held at Caswell Springs United Methodist Church on Monday, March 21. Visitation will be from 1:00 P.M. – 2:00 P.M., and the funeral service will begin at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow at Caswell Springs Cemetery.
Pallbearers for the funeral service are Mark Cumbest, Brent Cumbest, Kyle Cumbest, Craig Cumbest, Adam Cumbest, and Gray Cumbest. Honorary pallbearers are members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class and members of the Caswell Springs United Methodist Church Administrative Board.
Those friends and family members who wish to contribute to the Caswell Springs United Methodist Church Building Fund in lieu of sending flowers may do so in memory of Lum Cumbest.
