Porter was the son of Rev. Shannon and Kitturah (Durnang) Akin. The town he was born in was named after his father. It was a prosperous little town while the railroads regularly ran through it, but died after the railroad left. In fact, Porter has the distinction of riding the Missouri Pacific Railroad train on its first run (1879) from Versailles, MO to Boonville, MO, and the last run of that line (1936).
On November 22, 1874, Porter married Missouri Ann Dill in Morgan County, Missouri. Their children were

Porter's wife, Missouri Ann, died in 1879.
On February 8, 1880, Porter married Katherine R. Baughman. Their children were
Porter's wife, Katherine, died in July of 1888.
On October 4, 1888, Porter married Mary Emily (Peoples) Stone. Their children were
Goldia Shannon, and
Porter's wife Mary Emily, died in August of 1925.
Porter made his living as a farmer and horse trader. He died at home with a cerebral hemorrhage (Missouri death certificate # 39313).
