Robert C. Burkholder
81, of Tucson, Arizona died in hospice on January 16, 2006. Born in Ephrata, PA on December 12, 1924 to Charles and Helen M. Burkholder. Robert graduated from Ephrata, PA High School in 1942. In 1949, he graduated from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Forestry. He received his Masters of Forestry in 1950, from Yale University; Robert was also a member of Xi Sigma Pi Forestry Honorary Fraternity. In December 1942, Robert enlisted into the U.S. Air Force and was called to active duty in April 1943. From April 1943 to January 1944 he was an Aviation Cadet. Graduated pilot and commissioned; Service in U.S. and Europe from January 1944 to November 1945; 2nd Lt. to Captain; then Major, U.S. Air Force Reserves. Robert flew 81 combat missions in Europe, 34 missions in B-17 Flying Fortress (457th Bomb Group, 750th Bomb Squadron) and after completing fighter transition training, 47 missions in P-51 Mustang (364th Fighter Group, 385th Fighter Squadron, 1st Scouting Force). He was awarded six stars to the European Theater of Operations ribbon for the Air Offensive Europe, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe Campaigns, two Distinguished Flying Crosses (DFC with Oak Leaf Cluster); and nine Air Medal (AM with 8 Oak Leaf Clusters). Member of the British Royal Air GOLDFISH CLUB for having ditched in the North Sea (July 12, 1944) and being rescued from a dinghy by crash boats of the RAF AirSea Rescue Service. After graduation from college, Robert served for approximately 32 years with the U.S. Forest Service in Wyoming, Idaho and Utah as Assistant District Forest Ranger, District Forest Ranger, National Forest Staff Officer and Regional Employee Development and Training Officer. He retired and moved to Tucson, AZ in December 1979. Robert was a member of the American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; P-51 Mustang Pilot's Association; 364th Fighter Group Association; Scouting Force Association; charter member of the Battle of Normandy Foundation; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; Association of Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics; Arizona Wildlife Federation; Defenders of Wildlife, and The Nature Conservancy. Robert Burkholder is survived by a son, Robert F. Burkholder; daughter-in-law, Virginia Rae (O'Brien) Burkholder; two step-grandchildren and loving and caring neighbors. A private service will be held at East Lawn Palms Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at The American Heart Association, 5325 E.
