John Edwards Sr.
Son of Thomas Edwards,
Husband of Elizabeth.
John Edwards served in the Pennsylvania Militia in 1794 as an ensign and in 1797 as Captain in the 2nd Co of the 5th Reg 2nd Battalion of Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
"John Edwards, served as a soldier, under Gen. Anthony Wayne, against the Indians in the Northwest in 1794."(Milton E Shirk)
In 1794 Gen Anthony Wayne led The Legion of the United States to the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Toledo, Ohio.
John returned to Lancaster County abt 1798 and married Elizabeth Walter. They raised their family in the Cocalico Valley until the year without a summer. Farming was bad, crops failed and earning a living was almost impossible. So they had to move to find work.
They came to Marietta between 1816 and 1817 from Cocalico township to Marietta after hearing about the building up of the town in hopes of making enough money to live. In 1818 great great great grandfather with many many other started helping to build the Marietta Union Meetinghouse also.
He and Elizabeth had nine children. It was a damp cold fall and even tough John Edwards succumbed to illness as did others.
After his death, some children stayed in the area, some went back towards Cocalico Valley and some moved on westward.
Our quest is to trace each one of his children.
