Lancaster Daily Intelligencer Journal, Jan 25, 1930
"John Edwards, 56, Killed on Road
Deputy Coroner Long, After Investigation, Pronounced Death Accidental
Struck by an automobille when lying along the road leading to the Ephrata and Lebanon trolley station at Hopeland, John Edwards, fifty-six of Hopeland was fatally injured late Thursday night. He was taken to the office of Dr. J. A. Long, of Brickerville, but was dead when he arrived; death being caused by a fractured skull.
The machine which struck Edwards was driven by John Dauffman, twenty-five, of Hopeland, who says that he did not see the man lying in the road. After the front wheels had passed over the victim's body, Kaufman applied the brakes, but he was unable to get Edwards out from under the car until Raymond Hensel, Cyrus Boyer and LeRoy Fetter, all of Hopeland, assisted him. The dying man was taken to the office of Dr. Long, by Hensel.
It was first believed by Paul Edwards, son of the victim, that he had met with foul play, but the idea was abandoned when the dead man's watch and money were found in his pockets.
Edwards had returned to Hopeland from Ephrata on the 9 o'clock car and went to the restaurant of Raymond Hensel, near the trolley station. He stayed there until 11:10 o'clock when he left saying he was going to his home. Five minutes later, he was struck by the machine. Dr. Long, who is deputy coroner, conducted an investigation and pronounced death accidental; claiming that Edwards had been drinking.
Edwards is survived by his son, Paul; and the following brothers and sisters; Kate, wife of John Ziss, West Lawn; Emma, wife of Harvey Enger, Lancaster; Mabel, wife of Henry Fasnacht, and Rebecca, wife of Harvey Balmer, both of Ephrata; Stephen, Ephara R.1; and Paul D., of Hopeland. His wife preceded him in death five years ago. He was a member of the Improved Order of Red Men. Funeral services will be held in the home of his son, Paul, Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock with further services in the Hopeland, U. B . church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery."
