Dr. E.O. Hawkins, 85, died on January 17, 2011 at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
He was born July 19, 1925 in Van Buren to E.O. and Cecile Robinson Hawkins.

He was a graduate of Van Buren High School, he held bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Arkansas. Professor emeritus of English, he also served as associate dean of arts and sciences and head of the English department during his 27 years at Mississippi State University. His interest in coming to Mississippi stemmed from his Faulkner scholarship. He previously taught at Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee State, University of Arkansas, Pierce Junior College in Los Angeles and William Jewel College in Liberty, Missouri.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in both the European and Pacific theaters. In Starksville, he was a founding member of the community chorus and member of community theater in which he acted and directed. He also sang for 19 years in the choir of First United Methodist Church and for the last 25 years in the choir of Trinity Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Elizabeth Jemison Hawkins; four daughters, Cathy Hawkins (Larry) Scales of Ackerman, Eileen Hawkins of New York City, Laura Hawkins of Garland, Texas, and Haley Hawkins (Ross) Hirshfield of Hattiesburg; two sons, Ken (Sherie) Hawkins of Tallahassee, Fla., and Douglass Thompson of Tupelo; eight grandchildren, Mary Scales (Mike) Parish of Ackerman, Joanna Scales (Joey) Brockhoff of Slidell, La., Carley Johnston (Tim) Nasis of Plano, Texas, Megand and Caitlin Probus of Garland, Lauren Hawkins of Tallahassee, Anna Beth and Trinity Hirshfield of Hattiesburg; and four great grandchildren, Alexandria and Drew Parish of Ackerman and Will and Ty Brockhoff of Slidell.

A memorial service was held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Starkville, Mississippi.
He was interred on Wednesday, January 26 at Fairview Cemetery in Van Buren.
