Funeral services for Mrs. Karenza Davis Gilfoy, 78, were held at First Baptist Church in Jackson Monday, with burial at Woodland, near Houston.
Mrs. Gilfoy died Saturday morning at Jackson Baptist Hospital, an institution which she had served more than 25 years, 19 of them as its superintendent.
The hospital's school of nursing is named for her and as a tribute to her memory, the Gilfoy School of Nursing suspended operations Monday in order that the faculty and students might attend final services.
Mrs Gilfoy was born and lived much of her life in Chickasaw County; was the first student ever graduated from Houston High School' attended Mississippi State University as the only coed during her student days.
She was employed by the U.S. Government at Muscle Shoals, Alabama, after graduation and marriage in 1909. Later she was employed by the Grenada Bank and Trust Company in its Houston office until she moved to jackson as bookkeeper and assistant superintendent of Baptist Hospital.
Upon resignation of the Reverend Wayne Alliston, she was named superintendent and served in that capacity until her retirement in 1954.
In 1962 the Jackson Exchange Club conferred upon her its Golden Deeds Award, and the past December the board of directors of the Old Men's Home awarded her a plaque of honor upon her retirement as secretary of the Executive Committee of the board.
She was hospital chairman for the Board of the Old Ladies Home, and active as a member and officer in numerous organizations including the Pilot Club, B&pw Club, UDC, DAR and Eastern Star, of which she was Worth Grand Matron in 1930 and an international officer of the Grand Chapter in 1931. She was active member and leader in the Baptist church and the Woman's Missionary Union.
Mrs Gilfoy is survived by her daughter in law, Mrs. Robert Gilfoy; two sisters; one brother; three grandchildren, on of whom is James Robert Gilfoy Jr, of Lexington; and on great grandchild, Hiller Somerville Gilfoy of Lexington.
