James Willis Battle, 54, of 173 Nehemiah Drive, Forest City, N.C., widower of Carrie Thomas Battle, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at 1:45 a.m. at Hospice of Rutherford County Inc., Forest City.
Son of the late Early Battle and the late Reverend Elizabeth Thompson Battle, he was born on June 11, 1955, in Cleveland County, N.C. He was a 1973 graduate of Crest High School in Shelby and also graduated from the Job Corp. He was an employee of Gardner-Webb College.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, John Joseph Battle, Danny Jerome Battle, Robert Lee Battle and Early Battle, Jr.; and two sisters, Odessa Taylor and Matilda Battle.
Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Davis of Forest City; a step-son, Avery Thomas of Shelby; four sisters, Lizzie McDowell of Shelby, Christine Norris of Mooresboro, N.C., Shelia Battle and Marie Jackson, both of Forest City; a brother, Eddie Battle of Fredrickburg, Va.; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services will be held Thursday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home with the Revs . Modestine Manning and Robert Dover officiating. Interment will follow in Mikes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family is at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Edward Norris, 2404 Camp Creek Church Road, Mooresboro.
