William McHoes was born 16 July 1815, in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, to John and Elizabeth McHoes. He was baptized 10 September 1815 into the Williams Township Congregation. In 1826 at age eleven he was orphaned and Jacob Woodring was appointed his guardian.

He married Miss Elizabeth Woodring, of Easton 30 November 1839 at Easton. She was born 27 December 1820 at Easton, Northampton, Pennsylvania, to John Woodring and his wife Christiann (Elizabeth) Lattig. She was baptized 4 March 1821 at the First (German) Reformed Church at Easton, Pennsylvania.

They had five children born to them while living in Pennsylvania: Anna, John, Oliver, Rebecca, and Thomas W. In 1849, the family made the overland journey from Pennsylvania to Illinois by team and wagon with Charles Woodring', Thomas and Jacob Bumis', and Mr. Applebauch's families. They stayed on John Miller's farm that first winter; in the spring, they moved to the prairie north of Piles Grove in Stephenson County , near Freeport, where daughter Sarah was born; next they moved to Shuey Mills, Wisconsin, remaining there two years, where Mary was born. They then returned to Stephenson County, Illinois, locating near Spring Creek, where William purchased a farm. Their daughters Susie and Christie were born there. Later William sold his farm and bought a farm of 160 acres two miles south near Orangeville on the southwest quarter of Section 1 , where Stephen, Ella, Ulysses and George were born. There were thirteen children in all.

Elizabeth Woodring McHoes died 29 November 1869. On 31 October 1871, William married to Mrs. Hannah (Lattig) Mann of Cedarville. In the summer of 1882, he left the old homestead and moved to Davis where he resided until his death 28 October 1900, aged 85 years, 3 months, and twelve days.. His death was very sudden.
