Gerhard "Gay" Brown, 84
Gerhard "Gay" Brown was born to Carrie (Berdahl) and John Brown, Jr., on March 14, 1918, on a farm west of Garretson. In 1920, his parents purchased a farm in Logan Township. He attended Crothers Country School district #36. He went on his own at the age of 13 and worked his way through high school graduating from Garretson High School in 1936. He held various jobs and was employed by John Morrell when he entered the U.S. Army in October 1941. He was assigned to the 147th Field Artillery Regiment and then served in the SWPA and the ETO.
Gay married Arleen Ustrud on Oct. 7, 1941, in Crooks. It was difficult to find housing, so they rented the Morefield Store and he worked at the Air Base in Sioux Falls. They moved to Sioux Falls a year later, where he worked for Montgomery Ward for a number of years. The couple moved to Moline, Ill., where he worked as a machinist for John Deere for three years. He and Dr. Moller also purchased some development property in 1963. Arleen died in 1964. He started Gay Brown Realty and Insurance in 1965. He sold Browns Store to Terry and Pat Sward in 1966. Gay married Evelyn Wiggins Herreid on May 6, 1966, in Sioux Falls.
In 1969, he sold his insurance agency to Pete and Marie Scwhebach. They then formed the Dell Rapids Nursing Home Corporation, where he served as the executive secretary. He was the founder and administrator of Terrace Manor Nursing Home until he retired in 1980. They sold the nursing home to Kelly and Charles Brown and moved to Lake Madison. After Evelyn retired in 1982, they became winter Texans for 25 years. They also enjoyed traveling to Europe many times. The couple move back to Dell Rapids in 1996.
Gay was an active member of the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids, serving as choir director for many years. He was president of the Dells Planning and Zoning committee. He was also a lifelong member of the V.F.W. and the Dell Rapids American Legion., where he was a past commander and the commander of the Firing Squad. Gay was also a member of the National College of Nursing Administrators. He was listed in Who's Who in the Midwest, member of the Dell Rapids Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rites and El Riad Shrine, the Orpheus Male Chorus, Norse Glee Club and the Uptown Chorus of Chicago.
Gay died on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003. He was preceded in death by his son, Bruce; his parents; his sisters: Sylvia, Hanna Marie, and Charlotte; and his brothers, Ellsworth and Clifford.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Evelyn, Dell Rapids; his children: Galen Brown, and his special friend, Souane, St. Paul, Minn.; Judy and Marty Skar, Dayton, MInn.; Kelly and Lois Brown, Sioux Falls; Lois and Don Christensen, Sioux Falls; Charles and Paula Brown, Sioux Falls; Linda and Alan Ljunggren, Dell Rapids; Larry Brown, Los Angeles, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Arne and Doris Brown, Brookings; his sisters; Norma Johnson, Baltic; and Helen, and her husband, Richard Dunn, Mesa, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at 11 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids. Rev. Mark Docken will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Dell Rapids Cemetery with military rites by the Dell Rapids American Legion.
Visitation will begin at 5p.m., today, Wednesday, Jan. 22, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Casketbearers will include Tim Ljunggren, Benjamin Brown, Joseph Brown, Samuel Christensen, Jason Christensen and Peter Brown.
