David at 22 years old and John at 19, enlisted to fight in the Civil War on the same day, 29 April 1861.
John was with the 1st Minnesota and fought in the Battle of the Wilderness. He became ill but his captain thought he was malingering and sent him back out to fight. He died 27 May 1865, Ripley, Chattanooga, TN.
David was discharged on 6 July 1862 because of a disability. He was given land to homestead because of his disabilitity. He chose Dell Rapid, SD. It is here where David, his wife Mary and some of their children are buried.
