|Death: ||Feb. 5, 1864|
A true pioneer woman, she,husband George and 5 sons migrated to TX in a covered wagon arriving Dec. 1848, settling on 640 ac Peters Colony headright, Geo. Floyd Abstract 463, 1 mi. north of Lancaster along Overton Branch (now Newton Creek) just east of the original Dallas to Lancaster Rd laid out by Col. R.P.Sloan in 1846. George came to TX in 1846,scouted out and claimed his land,built a log cabin on the bank of Overton Branch, then returned to ILL to wrap up his business and return with his family to TX in 1848. George "proved up" his land patent by living on and improving the land, then having his patent approved and filed in Austin at the TX General Land Office. Some of George and Nancy Floyd's descendants still live on the remaining 4.4 acres of the original parent tract as of July 2006.
It is said George Floyd is buried next to his wife Nancy,in Edgewood, but has no headstone. Is also said he is buried in Floyd Family Cemetery on his headright app. 1450 ft east of Hwy 342 (Dallas Ave)and 250 ft. south of Floyd Branch. No one now knows for sure where he is buried or why he never had a headstone.
A listing of graves in the Floyd Family Cemetery can also be found via Find A Grave.com. It was established 1861 upon the death of Martha Harris, wife of Rev. Thomas H. Harris, Cumberland Presbyterian minister. He bought the adjoining Smith Elkins Abstract 430, which is divided by Hwy 342 just north of Telephone Rd. (formerly Newton Creek Rd.). Louie T Dodd is caretaker of the cemetery and is the 3rd grt gr son of George Floyd and 4th grt gr son of Thomas Harris.
