Military: Pvt Co E 52nd Regt MA Infantry (US Civil War Soldiers)
According to Plainfield Death Records, Pvt. Howes "died of disease on board a steamer on the Miss(issippi) River" while in service in the Civil War. His name appears in a group listing of other soldier sons of Plainfield who also died around the same time. No doubt the report of his death was taken from a list of casualties regularly reported out by the Union Army and delivered to homoetowns across the country. Military records always refer to his assignment as being to the "52nd" Regiment, although his gravestone lists him as of the "522nd", which could be an error.
