Nellie P. Holden, former Cuba resident

ELMIRA - Nellie P. Holden of Flannery Apartment, Elmira, formerly of Cuba, died peacefully Monday (May 11, 2009).

Born Dec 13, 1917, in Belvidere, she was a daughter of Leon and Ethel Whitcomb Palmer. In 1941, she married her beloved husband, John Holden, who predeceased her.

Nellie was a graduate of the Mountain Clinic in Olean and was a nurse for many years at both Wellsville and Cuba Hospitals. She became a homemaker in 1945 when John returned from World War II.

She found time to volunteer her church, the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels and voter registration. Her abundant love of life and people was obvious to all who knew her.

Surviving are three children, Jim (Patty) Holden of Elmira, Ann (Lee) Edington of Phelps and Pat Kidd of Port Richey, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, including Jon (Christine) Edington ad daughters Grace and Rebecca of New Jersey, Mary Ann Holden of Brooklyn, Sara Holden of Sag Harbor, Cristi (Kevin) Oczek and son Anthony of Buffalo; s sister-in-law, Ruby of Cleveland; and three nieces.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Malcolm and Wilbur; and a sister, Doreen.

At Mrs. Holden's request, there will be no calling hours. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday (May 16, 2009) at 2 p.m. in the McInerny Funeral Home, 502 W. Water St., Elmira.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, 414 Lake St., Elmira, NY 14901; or the Presbyterian Church, 38 E. Main St., Cuba, NY 14727.
