Buncombe County was formed in 1791 from a portion of Burke & Rutherford Counties and Haywood County was formed in 1808 from a portion of Buncombe County.
He married Elender McCall sometime around 1824 and is first listed in the 1840 Census Records in Haywood County.
Later, he and Elender are listed in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census Records in Jackson County.
Hence was a farmer and also operated a general store in the Ochre Hill Community. His store also contained a Post Office where he was listed as Post Master on 14 Jun 1875.
Hence would die at his home in the Ochre Hill Community of Jackson County. He was the first person to be buried in this cemetery and it was named in his honor.
He was 80-years of age.
