GEORGE H. BURGESS
George H. "Stubby" Burgess, 79, a World War I Veteran and a resident of 519 1/2 South St., Bennington, died unexpectedly this morning at Putnam Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Bennington, born Dec 2, 1894, a son of George R. and Nellie (Grover) Burgess, and received his education in the schools of this town. He was formerly self-employed as a building contractor and retired in 1968. He had a life-long interest in horses and through the years he owned many race horses that he trained and drove in state fairs and at area racetracks. He was a familiar figure to small children in his neighborhood and his fondness for them was well known.
He is survived by his widow, the former Alice Bleau of Bennington; four brothers, Frank, Earl, Guy and Clyde Burgess, Sr.; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Shea, Mrs. Irene Thurber and Mrs. Jennie Knapp, all of Bennington; nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 pm at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Floyd I. La Bombard, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Bennington, officiating. Entombment will be in Park Lawn Cemetery vault, with burial in the spring to be in that cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Vermont Heart Fund, through the funeral home.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9.
