BENNINGTON - Paul H. Becker Sr., 87, a resident of the Vermont Veterans Home, died July 8, 2011, following a long illness.
He was born in Bennington on June 16, 1924, the son of Horace and Hazel (Gore) Becker, and received his education locally.
He served in the Army during World War II where he was taken prisoner by the Germans during the Battle of the Bulge and spent six months in captivity.
Mr. Becker married the former Anna Pacitto on Sept. 23, 1945, in North Bennington.
He worked in construction, was a superintendent with Connecticut Valley Corp. and active in building area schoolhouses. He also worked at Eagle Square Stanley Tool Co. in Shaftsbury, Southern Vermont Orchard, C&B Block Co., and was a Maytag repairman. He also assisted Dr. Lanfair at his veterinarian clinic.
He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife; three children, Sharon Greene, Mary Becker, both of Bennington, and Marie Mason of Eagle Bridge, N.Y.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a sister, Hazel Green of Bennington; numerous nieces and nephews and a cousin.
Mr. Becker was predeceased by a brother, Merle Becker, and a sister, Lolita Smith.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, where friends may call from 11 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will take place in St. John's Cemetery in North Bennington.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through the funeral home.
