Emmette J. Barber
Emmette Joseph Barber, 48, of 123 Pleasant St., owner of Empire Cleaners, died Sunday at Putnam Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for three days.
The son of Joseph N. and Louise (Butler) Barber, he was born in Burlington July 1, 1919, and had received his education in Burlington. He came to Bennington in 1948.
A World War II Veteran, he had served with Btry C, 89th Field Artillery Bn., and had seen active duty in Guadacanal, the Northern Solomons and Luzou. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater campaign ribbon, the Philippine Liberation ribbon with bronze service star and the Good Conduct Medal.
Survivors include his wife, the former Mildred Hathaway, whom he married in 1947, and a son, David, who was affiliated with him in the operation of the Empire Cleaners; also two other sons, Steven and Donald, both of Bennington; four brothers, Joseph, Robert and Howard, all of Burlington, and Leo of Hartford, Conn.; five sisters, Mrs. Harold (Irene) Shappy and Mrs. Theodore (Anna) Krogel, both of California, Mrs. Madeline Snell of Texas, Mrs. Louis (Gladys) Urban of Watertown, Conn., and Mrs. Charles (Marian) Dubie of Washington, D.C.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 9 am in Sacred Heart Church with the pastor, the Rev. Charles Wallen, officiating.
Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home tonight from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Burial will be in Park Lawn Cemetery.
