OBITUARY:
Birth: Aug. 9, 1849Death: Apr. 8, 1948
In the CARLSBAD CURRENT ARGUS, April 8, 1948, obituary reads as follows:
MRS. RACHEL LARREMORE, 98, PIONEER RESIDENT SUCCUMBS
Mrs. Rachel A. Larremore, 98, who had lived in Carlsbad and Eddy County for 68 years, died this morning in the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Hellyer
of 201 South Ash Street.
Mrs. Larremore and her husband, George, came to this county from Texas by wagon train in 1880 and settled on Seven Rivers near Lakewood. Larremore died here in 1909 and Mrs. Larremore will be buried beside him in Carlsbad Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
They were among the earliest settlers in this section of New Mexico and were attacked several times by Indians during the early days.
Later, they sold the farm where they had first settled and moved to another farm and ranch nearby, known as the Linger Longer place. It was one of the first irrigated farms in this area.
Mrs. Larremore's husband was acquainted with Billy the Kid, and later stopped at the Larremore house when passing through this area, W. E. Hellyer,
Jr., a grandson, said.
The Larremores lived on the Seven Rivers ranch until they moved to Carlsbad in 1905. After her husband's death in 1909, she lived in Lakewood for a time and then returned here.
Besides her daughter here, Mrs. Larremore is survived by a daughter in Lordsburg, Mrs. Dora Bass, and two sons, Creed Larremore of Mule Creek, New Mexico; and Mart Larremore of Crowheart, Wyoming.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday in the West Chapel, with the Rev. A. G. Bell, pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating.
