Eva Sue Etheredge Butler, 95, of Huntington Beach, Calif., formerly of Clarksdale and Jonestown, died of heart failure Tuesday, Sept. 3,2002, at Los Alamitos Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church in Clarksdale with the Rev. Billy Ray Stonestreet officiating.
Mrs. Butler, a retired schoolteacher, was born Jan. 31, 1907, in Saluda County, S.C. After graduating from Winthrop College in South Carolina, she moved to Mississippi to teach school. A music major, she first taught secondary English and was later recertified for elementary teaching. Her 27 years of teaching experience culminated at Jonestown Elementary School, where she taught sixth grade.
Mrs. Butler moved to Clarksdale after the death or her husband, George W. Butler Jr., in 1980. In 1999, she moved to Flowers Manor Retirement Home and participated in a senior choir that sang in a statewide competition. She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Retired Teachers Association. In April, Mrs. Butler moved to California to be close to her daughter, grandchildren and great-grand- daughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Elynor Elizabeth Hamilton of Hampton, Va., and Suzanne Butler Hutton of Seal Beach, Cali f.; a sister, Isabel Mayer of Georgetown, S.C.; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
