He married Sarah Legalia Osborn on March 31, 1853. He grew up in Rawsonville and moved to Ypsilanti in 1853.
He owned 540 acres of land & conducted a successful grocery business until 1878. He built several of the business blocks of Ypsilanti: in 1857 the Spencer Building; in 1860, two stores on Congress St.; in 1866 the Arcade Block and owned 300 feet of frontage where Hemphill, Batchelder & Co's bank was located.
He had four children:

Nellie.
