Obituary: Newton Funeral Saturday
Americus, Dec. 17, 1942--Funeral services for Mrs. Clarinda Isabel Newton, Americus pioneer who died at 5:20 o'clock Wednesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Proehl, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sexton Funeral Home in Americus. The Rev. R. E. Fisher, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, will conduct the services, and burial will be in the Fruitland Cemetery at Americus. Six grandsons will be pallbearers. The casket will be open at the Sexton Funeral home until time for the services.
Mrs.Newton, who was born in Indiana, March 16, 1854, came to Kansas with her parents in territorial days. Her father, the late Henry Moser, was a member of the Americus Town company, and was instrumental in the choice and development of the present Americus townsite. She was married to David S. Newton on July 4, 1876, by the Rev. Andrew Coyle, of the Christian Church of Hopewell, Iowa.
Mr. Newton died April 20th, 1926. Five daughters and three sons survive Mrs. Newton. They are Mrs. Clara Yeakly, Americus; Mrs. Gertie Mercalfe, Emporia; Mrs. Edith Lewis, Santa Moria, Calif.; Mrs. Alice Stuck, Mrs. Bertha Proehl, Clyde Newton, Fred Newton, and Earl Newton, all of Americus. A brother Tnomas Moser, of Yale, Okla. 25 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandchild also survive. Mrs. Newton was a member of the Christian Church.
