Eugene was aboard an Illinois Air National Guard refueling aircraft when it went down over Greenwood, McHenry County, Illinois (about 50 miles northwest of Chicago). All 27 men aboard the plane perished on March 19, 1982 at approximately 9:11 p.m. 4 crewmen from the plane and the rest of the men were from the 928 Tactical Airlift Group (TAG).
It was later determined that the cause of the crash was due to 'an overpressurization under the cargo floor,' which would have caused an explosion from the accumulation of combustible vapors.
You can also see a plague that was erected at the Fort Sheridan Cemetery that has Eugene's name on it. Reference Find-A-Grave #719996518.
