Major Burke perished aboard a U.S. Air Force KC-135A Stratotanker (#56-3628) when it crashed on takeoff at Walker Air Force Base, Roswell, New Mexico, in severe crosswind conditions. Six died on the aircraft and three on the ground.

T/Sgt. Carlton Price was working in a maintenence hanger when the fully-loaded aerial refueling tanker skidded across the runway and parts struck the hanger. He later died March 17, 1960, at the Brooks Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas from burns and injuries.
