John was a son of James Williams and Elizabeth Glover. He married Mary Susan Stapp on January 12, 1858 at the residence of Joseph Stapp in Russell Co., KY and had nine children.

He enlisted as a Wagoner in the Union Army on October 8, 1861 at age 28. He was mustered into the 5th KY Cavalry Co. I as a Private at Gallatin, TN on March 31, 1862. He was mustered out of service at Louisville, KY on May 3, 1865.

John stated in his pension files that he was captured three or four times during the Civil War. According to a story passed down through the family, he once made his escape by clinging to a coupling pole on the underside of a wagon that had pulled up next to him. His brother Thomas also served in the 5th KY Cavalry Co. I.
