Death: Aug. 22, 1940

Artist and Naturalist. Mary Vaux was an artist and accomplished amateur botanist noted for watercolor paintings of wild flowers. Four hundred lithographs of her paintings were published by the Smithsonian Institution in 5 volumes titled "North American Wild Flowers" in 1925, and were republished in 1988. This edition drew widespread praise and was called "the Audubon of botany". A 1935 Smithsonian book, "Illustrations of North American Pitcher-Plants" included 15 more of her paintings. She served on the Interior Department's Board of Indian Commissioners from 1927 to 1932 and became president of the Society of Woman Geographers in 1933.
Mary Vaux was born to a prominent Quaker family of Philadelphia. Her father, George Vaux, Sr., instilled a Quaker belief in the spiritual value of nature study in his children. Mary's interest in the Canadian Rockies began when her family spent summers there. With her brothers George and William, she did pioneering work in glaciation studies and photography of the Rockies. When she climbed 10,496 foot Mount Stephen in British Columbia in 1900, it was the first ascent by a woman of a Canadian mountain that high. Mount Mary Vaux, a peak in Jasper National Park's Queen Elizabeth Range was named for her in 1908. She wrote of these mountains, "…nowhere else is there such a wealth of beauty and interest, and I conclude that the haunts so attractive to the world have no attraction for me."
In 1914, at the age of 54, Mary Vaux married famed geologist and paleontologist Charles D. Walcott.
