"A Livonia man, Marine Lt. James N. Sweet, was killed in a helicopter crash in Vietnam.
Sweet, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Newton Sweet, South Lima, was co-pilot of a Med-Evac helicopter which crashed into a mountain in the Quang Tri area. His parents were notified Monday.
A graduate of the State University Agricultural and Technical College at Alfred, Sweet earned an associates degree in mechanical technology. He had graduated from Livonia Central High School, where he was a member of the track team.
Sweet enlisted and went on active duty with the Marine Corps in January, 1968. During flight training Pensacola, Fla., he sang in the Navy Command Choir. He was commissioned a second lieutenant at the end of flight training, last April.
After advanced training as a helicopter pilot in Jacksonville, N.C., he left for Vietnam May 1.
Sweet was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Livonia, a member of its Holy Name Society, and an altar boy.
Surviving besides his parents are a sister, Mrs. Keith Cornelius, Almond and a brother, Michael in training at the U.S. Naval Base, Bainbridge, Md.
