James SCOTT Sr., the patriarch of most of Screven County's numerous Scott descendants, is believed to be buried in this old family cemetery. The third wife and widow of James SCOTT Sr., Temperance RAWLS, married secondly to Lewis POWELL; the latter pair are believed to be buried here as well, and most of the cemetery's now unmarked burials are that couple's descendants.

James SCOTT Sr. was also the father of several sons (including Denis SCOTT) and at least one daughter by his first wife, Sarah BRUNSON, and was the step-father of the three daughters of his second wife (one of the step-daughters took the name SCOTT prior to her marriage).

Based on today's available deed, census and probate records for James SCOTT Sr., and the census records of his three children by Temperance RAWLS, our ancestor James SCOTT Sr. appears to have been born between 1760 and 1770 in North Carolina, to have moved to Screven County by 1788, and to have died here in March or early April of 1832.

Although our James SCOTT Sr. was identified in the early 20th Century as the James SCOTT who served as a private with Lawson's Company from the 1st Regiment of Virginia during the American Revolution, we cannot be sure that this identification is accurate, primarily because several contemporary Southern men, some of whom were Revolutionary Soldiers, share the name James SCOTT.

After several decades in this now badly overgrown cemetery on private land, the Revolutionary Soldier marker (not the burial) that had been placed here in the 20th Century in connection with that identification, was moved in 2000 and placed as a cenotaph in the Buck Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery, a few miles to the east of this family cemetery location, because many descendants of James SCOTT Sr. are buried at that church cemetery.
