'Wibb' was born in Pulaski, Aug. 14,1836, the son of Proctor Peter Newcomb and Sarah Munson. On August 10, 1862, he enlisted in Co. C, 72nd IL Infantry, the famous "Chicago Board of Trade" Regiment.
In the assault on Vicksburg May 22nd, 1863, he received a fatal wound in the head. In this same battle B. F. ("Frank") Hoyt was also fatally wounded; they belonged to the same company and regiment and were both sent up the river on a hospital steamer to Memphis; Wilbur Newcomb died on May 31 aboard the steamer (it is believed) just as they were arriving at Memphis, and was buried there.
