Hazel W. Bass Stein

Birth: Sep. 29, 1907
Death: Jan. 26, 1993

Hazel was the elder of two daughters of Elsie Jane Givens and John O. Bass. Born and raised in Missouri, she had an early marriage to a man who was an alcoholic. She divorced him; they had no children. She moved to Denver, CO, where she took a job at Gates Rubber Company, in the accounting department. While working there, she met Lemuel Theodore Stein, who had been widowed twice, and with whom she shared a passion for fishing and travel. They married in 1950, and spent their married life traveling, stopping along the way to fish. In cleaning out their house after Hazel died, we found literally hundreds of photographs of one or the other of them holding fish they had caught. They both loved the southwestern U.S. and Mexico in particular. Hazel developed an extensive collection of silver and turqoise jewelry as a result of their trips.

Hazel, never having had children, wasn't fond of small children. She often said she hadn't been a mother and she wasn't going to be a grandmother. As children, visits to see Hazel and Grandpa were a trial, but as we got older we discovered that she liked teenagers and young adults. We had a wonderful time with her then, as did our friends. She was very funny, and could tell a shaggy dog story with the best of them.

For Hazel, who thought the best thing in the world was a good pole and a full creel.
