Theodore 'Ted' G. Strain

SULLIVAN - Theodore "Ted" G. Strain, 75, of Sullivan died at 12:21 p.m. Monday, April 1, 1996, in Mary Sherman Hospital.

He was employed by Southwest School Corporation and was principal of Sullivan Junior High School for 25 years, until he retired June 8, 1994.

He was born Aug. 28, 1920, on a farm in Fairbanks, to Benjamin Edgar Strain and Mae McKinney Strain.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred Crosson Strain, to whom he was married 53 years; one sister and brother-in-law Lucile and Garland Carrithers of Fairbanks; four nephews, Monte Riggs of Sullivan, Mark A. Riggs and Gary Strain both of Fairbanks, and Dan J. Carrithers of Grapevine, Texas; one niece, Sue Strain Adams of Fairbanks; one great-nephew, Toller Carrithers of Grapevine; and several other great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Maxine Riggs; and one brother, Laurens "Sport" Strain.

He was a musician and played in many dance bands with the Terre Haute Federation of Musicians. Ted's Dixie Land Band played in the Red Rock Amphitheater in Denver, Colo. He was a member of Masonic Lodge 373 Free & Accepted Masons in Fairbanks, Sullivan Order of Eastern Star, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, Zorah Shrine in Terre Haute, Sullivan County Scottish Rite, Fairbanks Riverview Club, Indiana State Teacher's Association, Sullivan County Shrine Club, Royal Order of Jesters, Sullivan Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks Lodge 911, and Strawberry Hill Connoneers. He was a veteran of War II and served with Gen. George Patton.

Services are 1:30 p.m. Thursday in DeBaun Springhill Chapel in Terre Haute, with the Rev. Jack Walls officiating, with eulogy by Jack Roman. Burial is in Farmersburg Westlawn Cemetery, with military graveside rites by American Legion Posts from Shelburn and Sullivan. Honorary pallbearers are Maurice Wible, Franklin Dwight Drake and Ed Scully Jr. Pallbears are teachers he worked with; Robert McCammon, Joe Cox, Mike Effner, Herald Stuffle, Ed Chickadaunce and Warren Pigg. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic memorial services at 7:30 p.m.
