CARBONDALE -- Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Christian Church in Overbrook for Eugene Roy "Gene" Harrison, 62, Carbondale, who died Thursday, March 25, 1999, at home. He had a heart ailment.
He was born April 16, 1936, in Kiowa in Barber County, to Roy and Elsie Ione Lamb Harrison. He attended school in Lyons and East Topeka Junior High School. He had served as a Shawnee County sheriff's reserve deputy for several years and had worked for Essex Wire. He was city marshal in Carbondale and Scranton in the 1970s.
He was a heavy equipment operator for the Martin-Marietta Co. in the 1970s and 1980s. He was transportation director for Three Lakes Cooperative in Lyndon for eight years before he retired in 1998 because of poor health. He was instrumental in the establishment of a girls' softball program in Carbondale. He was a coach and manager for boys' and girls' softball teams in Carbondale for many years. He was a past president of Local No. 307 of United Rubber Workers in Topeka.
He married Patsy Lea Hamilton on Dec. 24, 1954, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Randy Harrison, Vassar; daughters, Brenda Durkin, Kathy Pfannenstiel, Karen Harrison and Tammy Sillin, all in Carbondale, Rhonda Newman, Pomona, and Kim Timmons, Auburn; sisters, JoAnn Nimmo, El Dorado, and Donna Philbrick, in Oklahoma; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in Carbondale Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Carbondale Recreation Commission and sent in care of Greenwood-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home in Overbrook.
