Paul D. Haley Sr., 61, of Farmington died Friday evening, April 9, 2004, at his beloved "camp" in New Portland.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1943, in Farmington, a son of Stephen W. and Ruth P. (Boulter) Haley.
Paul was educated in Farmington schools, graduating from Farmington High School with the class of 1961. He married Mary E. Maxham on Aug. 5, 1961, in Farmington.
At a very young age, Paul went to work for Gladys Bailey on the Bailey Farm, Bailey Hill. After that he lived and worked on the Phil Pillsbury farm during his high school years, and lived there for four more years with his wife, Mary. In 1965, he went to work for Bouffard's Furniture and was with them for eight years. From there he went to work for L.C. Andrews as a road salesman, selling building materials to contractors. When they went out of business, he stayed on with P.F. O'Connors for a short time, then went to Yarmouth and worked for D&S Corp., then came back and went to work for Hancock Lumber in South Paris, again as a road salesman. He also worked a short time for Cousineau Lumber. In 1990 (and up until the time of his death), he and Mary went to work for Dan & Scott Adams, managing the Farmington Motel.
Paul was a charter member of the Farmington Elks No. 2430. He was a past exalted ruler and a former trustee. On Jan. 13, 2004, he received an honorary life membership from the Farmington Elks. He also received his 35-year certificate. He was a lifelong member and the assistant fire chief of the West Farmington Fire Department.
In his younger years, he enjoyed bowling and hunting, and up until his illness he enjoyed golfing and snowmobiling. He looked forward to going to "camp," sitting on the deck and watching the deer. He and Mary enjoyed riding the back roads of Maine looking for moose, and usually would end up saying, "You can get there from here."
He will be sadly missed by his loving family and friends, who came faithfully to see him during his illness. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary E. Haley of Farmington; three sons, Paul Jr. of Farmington, Michael S. and his companion, Patrick Bourque, of Springvale, and Stephen M. and his wife, Angela, of Farmington; a daughter, Marcia A. Oliver and her husband, Michael, of Chesterville; three brothers, Mark S. Haley of Owls Head, Robert S. Haley and his wife, Elaine, of Jay, and Gary B. Haley and his wife, Linda, of Auburn; two sisters, Joyce M. Cote of Lewiston and Janice R. Haley of Lewiston; six grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, Derek, Christina, Joe and Emily; a great-granddaughter, Autumn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his father, Stephen Haley, on Sept. 19, 1966; his mother, Ruth Haley, on March 7, 1984; granddaughter Morgan Elizabeth Haley on Nov. 12, 1995; and his brother David B. Haley in June 2001.
