Co B 1st Alabama Infantry
CSA

The 1st organized 1 Apr 1861 in Pensacola Florida and remained their on duty for a year. Battles: Santa Rosa, Island Ten, Corinth, Port Hudson where they were captured, and exchanged in the fall. New Hope, Kennesaw, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta Campaign, Franklin, Nashville, Averysboro, Bentonville. About 100 men surrendered at Goldsboro.

Note: Santa Rosa Island, Fl is now called Okaloosa Island, and is a barrier reef located south of Pensacola. Fort Pickens was built there, of brick, between 1829-1834, and was used during the Mexican war. In 1861 it was held by Union forces. On 8 Jan 1861 a group of local men tried to take the Fort, and it is believed that the shots that were fired in this skirmish were the first known shots fired in the Civil War. The Confederates were never able to take the Fort, and it remained in Union hands throughout the war. - Rhonda
