9th Mississippi Bragg's Regiment
The Ninth and Tenth were the first Mississippi regiments in the service of the Confederate States, organized under General Bragg, 17 Apr 1861. Santa Rosa Island, Cumberland Gap, Corinth, Kentucky campaign of 1862, Murfreesboro, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge. They surrendered 26 April 1865, and paroled at Greensboro, N. C.
Note: Santa Rosa Island, Fl is now called Okaloosa Island, and is a barrier reef located south of Pensacola. Fort Pickens was built there, of brick, between 1829-1834, and was used during the Mexican war. In 1861 it was held by Union forces. On 8 Jan 1861 a group of local men tried to take the Fort, and it is believed that the shots that were fired in this skirmish were the first known shots fired in the Civil War. The Confederates were never able to take the Fort, and it remained in Union hands throughout the war. - Rhonda
