John is my great grandfather and the father of Ray Nelson Gee. John was a bridge builder in the First Engineers Co., H.Civil War. He marched with General Sherman to the sea in Georgia. He was a carpenter worked in grist mill in Advance. He was married three times had three children with his first wife(Mary Ellen Neeley) they are:Alice Ann Gee, Kate Ida May Gee and John W.H. Gee. He had six children with his second wife (Elizabeth Geer)and they are: Claudia Buyrd Gee, Ira P. Gee, Edith Gee, Maruice L. Gee, Earl Eugene Gee and Ray Nelson Gee. He had a total of nine children. He Then married Charlotte Youens and they had no children.

Organized at Marshall, Mich. Sept. 12,1861 and mustered in to date Oct. 29,1861. Left State for Louisville, Ky., Dec. 17, 1861. assigned to duty by Detachments as follows;Companies "D," "F"&"G" with Thomas' 1st Division, Army of the Ohio, Companies "D","E" & "I" with McCooks's 2nd Division, Army of the Ohio, Com; Army of the Ohio, Companies "C" & "H" & Mitchells's 3rd Division, Army of the Ohio & Companies "A" & "K" with Nelsons' 4th Division, Army of the Ohio, June, 1862, Unattached, Dept. of the Cumberland to muster out.
Service- Companies "D", "F" & "G" with Thomas at Camp Dick Robinson & Somerset, Ky., constructing roads to Mill Springs. Action at Mill Springs Jan. 19, 1862. Other Companies on Green River, Ky. building storehouses fortifications etc, till Feb. 1862. Advance on Bowling Green, Ky. Feb. 14-15. Occupation of Bowling Green Feb. 15. (Cos."C" & "H") Advance on Nashville, Tenn.,Feb.14-28. Engaged in Building railroad bridges at Franklin, Columbia, Murfreesboro, etc., till Apr. 8 Companies moved to Shiloh, Tenn., Apr. 3-15 building bridges and repairing roads. 2 companies remained with Mitchell & engaged in running trains, etc., on Memphis & Charleston railroad & Nashville & Decator Railroad during May. Regiment engaged in advance on and siege of Corinth Miss., Apr. 29-May 30.Skirmish near Corinth May 9. Buell's campaign on line of the Memphis & Charleston Railroad in Northern Alabama & Middle Tennessee June to Aug. building bridges, repairing railroad, etc. At Huntsville, Ala.,& building bridges, repairing track & running trains on the Tennessee & Alabama Railroad & the Memphis & Charleston Railroad till Aug. Companies "C" "F", "I" & "K" at Stevenson, Ala, till Aug. rejoining Regiment near Gallatin till Sept. Companies "A","B","D" "G" & "H" moved to Nashville, Tenn., Aug. 20-22 & building bridges on the Louisville & Nashville railroad till Sept. 16. March in advance of the Army to Louisville, Ky., Sept. 16-26. Pursuit of Bragg into Kentucky Oct. 1-22. Battle of Perryville Oct. 8(Cos"A","C" & "H".) March to Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 22-Nov7 & to Mill Creek, near Nashville, Nov. 22. Duty there till Dec. 31. Battle of Stone River Dec. 31,1862 & Jan. 1-3 1863.Repulse of Forests' attack. Duty at Lavergne, Murfreesboro, etc., till Jun. 29 building bridges, magazines, repairing railroad and other engineering work. Repairing line of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad from Murfreesboro to Bridgeport, Ala., till Sept. Engineering duty at Chattanooga, Bridgeport, Stevenson & on Line of the Nashville & Chattanooga, Railroad, Nashville & Northwestern Railroad, Tennessee & Alabama Railroad & Memphis & Charleston Railroad building block houses, etc., till May 1864. Chattanooga Oct. 6 1863 Reopening Tennessee River Oct. 26-29, 1863. Browns's Ferry Oct. 27, 1863. 1 Battalion at Chattanooga May,1864. 1 Battalion on Memphis & Charleston Railroad building block houses from Decatur to Stevenson, ala, till June. Companies "L" & "M" at Stevenson, Ala., till Nov. 28, 1864. Regiment on duty on the Atlantic & Western Railroad building block houses, tec., till Sept. Ordered to Atlanta, Ga., Sept.25. Old members mustered out Oct. 31 1864. Duty at Atlanta Sept. 28 to Nov. 15. March to the sea destroying railroad track, bridges & repairing & making roads Nov. 15 -Dec. 10. Siege of Savanna Dec. 10-21. Carolina Campaign Jan. to April, 1865. South Edisto River, S.C., Feb. 9 North Edisto River Feb. 12-13 Columbia Feb. 16-17. Fayetteville, N.C. Mar. 11. Averysboro March 16 Battle of Bentonville Mar. 19-21 Occupation of Goldsboro Mar. 24.(Cos. "L" & "M") detached at Stevenson Ala., working on fortifications there & on Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad building block houses etc., till Dec. 1864 then at Nashville, Tenn., till Mar, 1865 Participated in siege of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Dec. 5-12 1864. Near Murfreesboro Dec. 15 Co. "L" captured. Rejoined Regiment at Goldsboro, N.C. March 25, 1865) Advance on Raleigh Apr. 10-14. Occupation of Raleigh Apr. 14 Bennett's house April 26. Surrender of Johnston and his army. March to Washington D.C. via Richmond, Va., Apr. 29-May 20. Grand Review May 23. Ordered to Louisville, Ky., June 6 thence to Nashville, Tenn. Duty at Nashville July 1 to Sept. 22. Mustered out Sept. 22 & dishcarged at Jackson, Mich, October 1 1865.
Regiment lost during service 1 Officer & 12 Enlisted men killed & mortally wounded & 351 Enlisted men by disease. Total 364.
