Military figure,Private Bai,Service No:7057, was the first Soldier of the British and Commonwealth Forces to be killed in action in the Great War.He served with the Gold Coast Regiment, West African Frontier Force.The Gold Coast Regiment, a formation of Artillery and Infantry whose Battle Honours go back to 1873, formed part of the Royal West African Frontier Force. During the First World War, the regiment served with distinction in Togoland (now Togo), in the Cameroons and in the last phase of the East African campaign.

The first British and Commonwealth men to die in action in the Great War were the sailors from HMS Amphion on 6th August 1914,war having been declared at 23.00 hours on 4th August 1914.[research and bio by Geoffrey Gillon]
