Martha was a descendant of William Brewster who come to America in 1620. Her family moved westward through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, and Ohio. Her parents James and Helen Johnson Peck moved to Illinois from Jay, New York in 1850.
John and Martha were married at the bride's home February 11, l886. They left immediately to live in a sod house in Section 32 of Scott Township in Sherman County, Nebraska. Joseph, Hattie, Arthur, Rollin and Mary Delda were born while the family lived on this farm. Robert and Cecil were born in Buffalo County in Section 5 of Loup Township
After Martha and John were divorced, she stayed on the farm and reared the younger children with the help of her older sons and her brother Phineas Peck.
Martha died of cancer and is buried in Pleasanton, beside her brother Phineas and sister Harriet Emma Howard.
