Retha M. "Kay" Kirkendall Graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 2, at 9:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, 9101 Kern Canyon Rd. Bakersfield; with Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m., at Valley Baptist Church, 4800 Fruitvale Ave. Bakersfield, CA. Retha M. "Kay" Kirkendall was born in Kibler, Arkansas, the youngest of ten children. Her father, Robert Cleveland Burrow, was a gospel singer, and her mother, Molly O'Dell Burrow, was a homemaker. Mom's family moved to California when she was a young child. She attended school in Buttonwillow, and then attended Kern County Union High School. She met and married Willard Kirkendall making their home in Bakersfield. Mom worked nearly 40 years in the medical field, including Kern Medical Center (formerly Kern General). The majority of her career (30 years) was with Dr. Lucille B. May and Dr. Elizabeth Admiral as office manager. After retiring, Mom and Dad enjoyed traveling and dancing on the weekends. Our father passed away in 1999, and shortly thereafter, Mom began volunteering at the Juvenile Justice Center and for the Take Away Tattoo program. She continued traveling with her favorite destinations being Pismo Beach, Las Vegas, and especially San Jose to see her grandchildren up north. Mom's pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She would always share pictures and talk about their accomplishments to everyone. Mom is survived by her sons, Steven and wife Maria of Hollister, CA; Gary and wife Karen of Brookings, OR; and daughter, Debbie of Bakersfield, CA. Her grandchildren, Steven, Jr. and wife Kimi of San Jose, CA; Nicholas of Santa Cruz, CA; Joe and wife Monica of San Jose, CA; Casey and Kelsey of Bakersfield, CA. Her great grandchildren, Jacob, Marisol and Samantha, all of San Jose, CA. She will also be missed by her special friend, Jerry Harris, as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her little dog, Cody, who was her constant shadow. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Dr. William Nyitray, and to the nurses and staff of Memorial Hospital and the Bakersfield Heart Hospital for their care and compassion.
