YORK Walter B. Ziegler, 91, died Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at 10:55 p.m. at York Hospital. Walter was the husband of the late Jean E. (Greer) Ziegler. He was born July 21, 1919, in York, a son of the late Walter B. and Mary R. (Lewis) Ziegler. Walter enlisted in the Army and became an x-ray technician before joining the Army Air Corp. In the Air Corp, he was a crew member in a B-17 from the 15th Air Force, 301st Bomb Group based in Foggia, Italy. His plane was shot down by German anti-aircraft fire on February 13, 1945 over Vienna, Austria. He spent the next 76 days as a guest of the Luftwaffe traveling through Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany. Later in life Walter and Jean revisited this area traveling extensively in the Alps through Italy, Switzerland, Germany and Austria ending up in Vienna. They also traveled to England, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, but their most exotic travels took them to Africa and Asia. Between 1972 and 1978 they covered South Africa, Botswana, Rhodesia, Mozambique, Kenya and Tanzania. Much of this travel was in a small two engine aircraft. In 1978 they were one of the first tour groups in China and one of the last to visit Iran. Trained as a draftsman he was a member and officer of The Engineering Society of York for many years. However he spent the most time at the York and York International Divisions of Borg Warner spending 14 years in each division. It was at York International that he worked on interesting projects that brought air conditioning to the Orient Express, the Saudi National Railroad and the private train for the King of Morocco. He was a 1937 Graduate of William Penn Senior High School, and attended both Penn State York and York College. A private committal service will be held at the convenience of close friends.
