Sam was a color sargeant of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry.
He lost his right leg in Antietam in Hoffman's barn.
He was discharged and came home August 1, 1863.
President Lincoln appointed him Lt. in the Veterans Reserve Corps. He commanded the 36th and the 120th companies of the 2nd battalion Veteran Reserve Corps. Did duty in the Freedman's Bureau at Pine Bluff Arkansas and was mustered out September 19, 1866.
