Luther Abel was from Gladewater, Gregg County, Texas.
1/Lt Abel was the son of Luther and Joe Ann Wood Abel of Wichita, Texas. He had flown P-47D "Thunderbolts" with the 83rd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group over the ETO in June/July 1944. It is believed that he became an instructor with the 495th FTG which was officially an 8th Air Force unit, but was charged with giving advanced training, specific to the European Theater of operations, to pilots of both the 8th and 9th Air Force. He was badly injured in a P-38 "Lightning" landing accident at Atcham, Shropshire and died a few days later.
1/Lt Abel was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.
He is buried in the American Military Cemetery, Cambridge, England.
