Tamara Platonovna Karsavina
Birth: Mar. 19, 1885
Death: May 26, 1978

Acclaimed Ballet Dancer and Coach. She studied with the St Petersburg Imperial School and with the Italian Caterina Beretta. Leading ballerina of Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes from its beginning in 1909 until 1922. Between 1909 and 1914 (paired with Nijinsky until 1913) she created the majority of famous roles in Fokine's Neoromantic repertoire, including Les Sylphides, Le Spectre de la Rose, Carnaval, Firebird, Petrushka, and Thamar. Married a British diplomat in 1917 and moved to London. She coached Margot Fonteyn in some of her former roles, like Firebird and Giselle. (bio by: Medora)
