Stephan Czerkies was born November 15, 1893 in Hłudno, a village now located in the administrative district of Gmina Nozdrzec, within Brzozˇw County, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, in south-eastern Poland. His father's name was Gabriel. His biological mother when he was young and his father remarried. His biological mother's or stepmother's name may have been Julia.
On November 9, 1911, Stephan left Europe from Hamburg on the S.S. Prinz Oskar for America. He traveled with Piotr Skop, Piotr Jarema, and ?? Jarema. They were all heading for Boyne Falls, Michigan. Sixteen days later on November 25, 1911, they landed in Philadelphia. Stephan would be naturalized in Charlevoix County, Michigan on April 8, 1926.
On January 24, 1916, Stephan married the former Mary Zajac in Monessen, Pennsylvania.
Sometime between 1916 and 1918, Stephan and Mary settled on approximately 80 acres of farm land at the corner of Thumb Lake and Hetrick roads in Boyne Falls.
Stephan collapsed while shoveling snow and died at home on April 13, 1959. The Rev. Jerome Szydlowski officiated. Bearers were Anthony Kullik, Steve Kipisz, Andrew Matelski, Jack Craig, Steve Jarema and Joseph Konopacki.
