Simba was one of 5 kittens my husband found at the junkyard. A car had just been towed in and the babies were in the trunk. Apparently, mama kitty had left her babies for a short while and in that time the car was towed. Within the first day, one of them went to the Rainbow Bridge. We took the remaining 4 to the vet and she wasn't sure we would be able to save them since they were too young to be away from their mom. She guessed they were no more than 2 days old. It was tough but we hand fed, letting them suckle kitten formula from the little space between our thumb and forefinger every 1-2 hours. Midnight (Min) helped us by keeping them warm and clean. Eventually, they were big enough to nurse from a tiny bottle. The vet was amazed. We saved all 4. The first time I weighed Simmy he weighed 3 1/2 oz. We ended up keeping all 4 since by that time we were their parents. We couldn't love them more if they had been born from our flesh.
Today, February 22, 2011, Simba was taken to the vet for what we thought was a cold. Xrays were done and he was put on oxygen. His heart and lungs were full of fluid. We had no idea. The vet tried to drain the fluid but it was no use. She explained to us that Simmy had been born with a heart defect. For over 6 years we never knew. Without the tests and xrays and had he not gotten sick we never would have known. Simmy had to be euthanized at the tender age of 6 years, 4 months and 21 days.
In that short time Simmy taught us a lot about love and caring about others. You see, hubby and I were very sick with the flu for over a week. Simmy waited until we were stronger before he let us know he was sick. Until the end, he cared more about us than himself. Simmy went to the Rainbow Bridge at approximately 1:15 p.m. today. We brought him home and cushioned him on top of his baby blankets and brushed him. He loved being brushed and would even brush his own whiskers if you held the brush. We wanted him to be beautiful. Hubby and I are crying like babies. The pain is unreal and we can't believe he has gone. We love you forever, Simmy.
I Stood By Your Bed (Feline version)
I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep.
I purred to you so softly as you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you - I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea. You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.
I was with you at the shops today, your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wished I could do more.
I was with you at my grave today, you tend it with such care. I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there.
I walked with you towards the house as you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."
You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.
It's possible for me to be so near you everyday. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew... In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.
The day is over now ... I smile and watch you yawning, And say "goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand there side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.
